WWF-Russia position on Olympic Games in Sochi - 2014
"We’re proud that Russia is the Olympic candidate winner but at the same time we will do our best to ensure that construction works do not destroy the environment”, says Igor Chestin, WWF-Russia CEO.
WWF believes that mountain wilderness areas in the Caucasus must be protected when developing new facilities for the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014. However, some plans pose a serious threat to the environment.
WWF is especially concerned about the future of one of the most valuable natural areas within the Sochi national park, the Grushevyi Ridge and river Pslukh watershed, the projected site of the bobsleigh and luge track and mountain Olympic village. Besides being located within the boundaries of Sochi National Park, this area is also part of the buffer zone of the World Heritage Site ‘Western Caucasus’ and Russia is internationally responsible for its conservation.
Construction works in this part of Sochi national park (the buffer zone of the World Heritage Site) will lead to forest logging and destruction of habitats and migratory routes of endangered species, with negative effect going far beyond the construction site itself. This was clearly stated...

The Olympic Torch and Olympic Torchbearer uniforms for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, designed by Canadian companies Bombardier and the Hudson's Bay Company, were unveiled Thursday in Whistler, where the alpine skiing, sliding and Nordic events for the Vancouver 2010 Games will be held.
The almost one-metre-long torch, inspired by both the lines carved into the snow by skiers slushing down mountains and the "undulating beauty of the snowy Canadian landscape", as described by Vancouver 2010, was designed by Bombardier's aerospace and transportation design teams in collaboration with the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee.
Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who was among those revealing the design said, "it cradles the Olympic Flame and its message of hope, the celebration of excellence, friendship and respect wherever it travels in the world. The Vancouver 201...
The 2014 Olympic Winter Games bid election was held July 4, 2007 at the 119th IOC session in Guatemala City, Guatemala and was won by Sochi, Russia after defeating PyeongChang, South Korea on the second ballot and Salzburg Austria on the first. It was possibly the tightest Olympic bid election in history - and on the heels of an over-exuberant 2012 election where the bids took notes - the cities pulled out every stop and campaigned with high-profile dignitaries and lavish presentations. It was the first election where the national leaders for each bid presented.
Other applicants that didn't make the short list were Almaty Kazakhstan, Borjomi Georgia, Jaca Spain and Sofia Bulgaria. Almaty narrowly missed the cut after straddling the benchmark they need to pass to automatically qulaify. The IOC executive committee voted to exclude the bid from the list of finalists.
The campaigning was fierce and millions of dollars were spent. Salzburg was considered and early leader in the race but faced many obstacles including questionable leadership, an Austrian athletes doping scandal, the IOC...
The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be the first time that the Russian Federation will have hosted the Winter Games; the Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow. The host city Sochi has a population of 400,000 people and is situated in Krasnodar, which is the third largest region in Russia.
The Games will be organised in two clusters: a coastal cluster for ice events in Sochi, and a mountain cluster located in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains. This will make it one of the most compact Games ever, with around 30 minutes travel time from the coastal to mountain cluster.
The Sochi Olympic Park will be built along the Black Sea coast in the Imeretinskaya Valley, where all the ice venues such as the Bolshoi Ice Palace, the Maly Ice Palace, the Olympic Oval, the Sochi Olympic Skating Centre, the Olympic Curling Centre, the Central Stadium, the Main Olympic Village and the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre, will be built anew fo...

Sochi 2014 Olympic organizers learning big lesson: Have a backup plan
Vancouver - The rough first few days of the Vancouver Olympics provided the best lesson of all for their successors organizing the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia: have a Plan B and be ready to act on it.
Dmitry Chernyshenko, the chief executive officer of the Sochi organizing committee, made that observation Sunday, saying he was impressed how the Vancouver Organizing Committee acted swiftly when trouble spots broke out.
"It's too early to say about any conclusions we've reached, but I will share with you my first impression," he said. "The first lessons learned is that the early advanced planning, especially for the first three days of the Games, was crucial. I will tell you I am impressed with how fast and efficiently the games officials acted with all the unexpected challenges they faced."
A keen study of international relations, Chernyshenko is too polite to offer criticisms of where Vanoc might have gone wrong or what mistakes they made that he's not going to repeat when it comes time for Russia to welcome the world.
But he said the 150 members of his organization that have been folded into Vanoc as part of an observation and knowledge transfer program, are sucking up every detail they can about how the Canadians are handling the Games...
